Salt Pans of Maras, Peru 19 images Created 3 Oct 2011
The salt evaporation pans near Maras, Peru, are located in the Sacred Valley, roughly 40 kilometers from Cuzco. The pans are built on steep terraces along one side of a narrow valley and fed by saline spring water that emerges from the rock close to the head of the valley. The water is sent throughout the pans by a network of channels. Salt has been collected from Maras since Pre-Incan times and it is thought that a collective of salt 'miners' has maintained the terraces and channels for many hundreds of years.
